Woman abuse is the actual or threatened physical, psychological, sexual, financial, verbal, or spiritual abuse of a woman by someone with whom she has, or has had an intimate, familial or romantic relationship.
One-in-four Canadian women have experienced violence at the hands of a current or past marital partner, since the age of 16 (Statistics Canada, 1993).

Woman abuse is a serious and widespread societal problem. Women from all ages, racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, socio-economic classes, religions, ability levels, and professions can experience abuse. The root causes of abuse are related to imbalances of power and control in relationships. |
Women who have experienced abuse are likely to be impacted emotionally, physically, socially, and financially. It may affect work and intimate relationships. Some women may face additional problems related to child-care, housing, and poverty. Immigrant and refugee women may face specific problems, such as racism, language barriers, isolation, lack of experience accessing social services, low economic status, immigration policies and fear of the criminal justice system.
